How to Apply

Admission Requirements

The 15-credit Certificate programs in Enhancing Early Learning (EEL), Kindergarten Instruction (KIND), Educating Young Children (EYC), and Infant Development and Supported Child Development (IDSC) are open to applicants with one or more of the following:

  • BA, BEd, BSc or related degree from a recognized university
  • Diploma in Early Childhood Education from an approved community/university college program, or equivalent
  • Some college or university course experience and relevant professional experience in related fields such as nursing, psychology, social work, child and youth care, occupational therapy, child development, etc.
  • Relevant professional experience in related fields such as teaching, nursing, social work, child and youth care, occupational therapy, infant/child development consultant and/or supported child development consultant in childcare settings, etc.

Students who have taken UBC courses towards a Certificate in ELL, KIND, or EYC, may be able to transfer up to 15 credits towards the Early Years Education Diploma (EYED). Students who have taken UBC courses towards a Certificate in IDSC may be able to transfer up to 15 credits towards the Infant Development and Supported Child Development Diploma (IDSC). Students must re-apply to be admitted to the Diploma programs. Some courses may also be applied to other Diplomas in education. Up to 6 credits from the ECE Certificates (not Diplomas) may be applied to the MA or MEd in Early Childhood Education.

The 30-credit Early Years Education Diploma (EYED) is open to applicants with one or more of the following:

  • BA, BEd, BSc or related degree from a recognized university
  • Diploma in Early Childhood Education from an approved community/university college program, or equivalent
  • Some college or university course experience and relevant professional experience in related fields such as nursing, psychology, social work, child and youth care, occupational therapy, child development, etc.
  • Relevant professional experience in related fields such as teaching, nursing, social work, child and youth care, occupational therapy, infant/child development consultant and/or supported child development consultant in childcare settings, etc.

The 30-credit Infant Development and Supported Child Development Diploma (IDSC) is open to applicants with one or more of the following:

  • BA, BEd, BSc or related degree from a recognized university
  • Diploma in Early Childhood Education from an approved community/university college program, or equivalent
  • 15 credit Certificate in Infant Development and Supported Child Development granted by the University of British Columbia
  • Some college or university course experience and relevant professional experience in related fields such as nursing, psychology, social work, child and youth care, occupational therapy, child development, etc.
  • Relevant professional experience in related fields such as teaching, nursing, social work, child and youth care, occupational therapy, infant/child development consultant and/or supported child development consultant in childcare settings, etc.

English Language Admission Standard

For applicants with a degree from countries where English is not the primary language – applicants must meet the UBC English Language Admission Standard (ELAS) requirements for demonstrating a minimum level of English language competency.

Confirmation of Admission

Once your application is accepted, you will receive a letter from the Teacher Education Office confirming your admission or re-admission, including your UBC student number and instructions on how to access information about your program through the Student Service Centre (SSC).
